What is LED Light Therapy?
Light-emitting diode (LED) light therapy is a non-invasive skin treatment that is used to target various skin conditions such as sun damage, fine lines, acne scarring and hyperpigmentation without the use of ultraviolet lights (UV).
What Are the Benefits of LED Light Therapy?
One of the biggest benefits of LED light therapy is its safety. Generally, LED therapy is safest when it’s used on its own without sensitizing medications and or creams since LED lights don’t damage the skin or skin tissues. Other benefits include:
- Treating acne
- Anti-ageing
- Wound healing
- Hair loss
- Psoriasis
- Skin cancers
- Hyperpigmentation
How is LED Light Therapy Done?
LED light therapy enters the skin’s layers to improve the skin’s overall complexion and surface. Different wavelengths of light in the LED light are penetrated the skin’s layer.
This penetration is then intended to trigger several biological processes that will help to heal and rejuvenate the skin. There are different types of lights that are used in LED light therapy: red, blue, green, and amber, each with its own benefits for treating skin and correcting skin conditions. Red and Blue light is often combined to help treat acne, decrease scarring, and promote anti-inflammatory effects.
Red Light
Red light is proven to help improve scarring, ageing, skin inflammation, and wrinkles as it helps the production of collagen for the skin. Collagen is a protein that helps with healing, as you age, your body produces less collagen and thus your body is more receptive to showing the signs of ageing.
Blue Light
Blue light is primarily used to treat acne as it helps to reduce acne-causing bacteria.
Preparation for LED Therapy
Before your appointment, we ask you to not wear any makeup and come with a clean and bare face.
Post-Treatment for LED Light Therapy
Since the treatment is non-invasive, you do not need time to recover after each session. You may begin to see some minor results after each treatment; however, most results will be noticeable after all your recommended sessions are done.
You may also require some maintenance treatments sessions, as your skin cells will naturally continue to lose collagen over time, and this shows signs of ageing once again.
How Effective is LED Light Therapy?
Our medical aestheticians are happy to discuss a proper treatment plan with you that will let you know how many sessions are required for your skin.
Side Effects of LED Light Therapy?
Common post-treatment side effects may include:
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Rash
- Tenderness
- Hives
- Pain
Who Should Not Get LED Light Therapy?
If you already have Psoriasis and want to use LED light therapy to help treat it, we recommend that you consult with your doctor as the results will work better if you are also on prescribed medication.Â
For those that take certain medications such as isotretinoin (Accutane) for acne or other skin conditions, we recommend that you consult your doctors, dermatologist, and aestheticians so that we can find the right solution for you.
