Happy Halloween to all our Spooktacular Renewers out there!!
As this holiday season approaches us, whether you celebrate it or not – we want to remind you of the harmful natural ingredients that you should stay away from when it comes to skincare. Natural skincare remedies can be truly effective – in moderation and with the help of trusted research. Still, there are those natural household ingredients that may be great on their own but when mixed into your skincare and skin regime can be more harmful than anything. Continue reading to find out the 4 most harmful natural ingredients used in skincare that can do more harm than good.
Olive oil
- Although olive oil is a rather heavy oil and thus it does not seep or absorb into the skin’s barrier it can do more harm than good in the long run. Olive oil can be known to cause breakouts in both sensitive and acne-prone skin. The heavy and greasiness can be very abrasive on the skin and cause rashes and or skin irritations. In addition, those prone to blackheads specifically may see an increase when using olive oil on the skin in large amounts. With that said, the use of olive oil is very dependent on the individual’s skin – that is why we recommend you consult with your dermatologist before using this as an at-home remedy or in at-home skin facials. If you don’t have a dermatologist, don’t fret you can consult with us here at Renew and our staff is here to help you every step of the way.
Lemon Juice
- As lemon juice in the skin and wellness community is known to help with discolouration and inflammation – once again it is an ingredient that can cause more harm over the years. The high acidity of lemon juice can sadly cause permanent damage to the skin, no matter how sensitive your skin is. Lemon juice can alter the natural PH of our acid mantle which in turn can impact and cause skin irritation and hyperpigmentation. So next time you use Kemon juice to help with inflammation just remember the dangers the juice can cause over time.
Essential Oils
- Although they can do wonders to soothe and calm us down, these holy grails of the wellness community are not something that you should put onto your skin. The reason why is very similar to why the skincare community and skin care professionals urge clientele to not use scents in their products, simple the better something smells is a clear indicator that it may contain artificial and unnatural ingredients- the more of these that the more likely the products can harm, damage and irate your skin. The skin damage over time can result in skin conditions like dryness, redness and itchiness.
Coconut Oil
- Coconut oil when mixed with other ingredients, used in small doses and diluted to some degrees can be very beneficial to the skin. However, some studies say that overuse of this natural ingredient can be very harmful to the skin. This is because, coconut oil is simply comedogenic, meaning that will clog the pores on your face. Coconut oil is so thick that when applied to the skin barrier it will not absorb at all, it will just lay on the skin’s outermost layer and start to blog and fill our pores. It can also disrupt your skin’s pH balance. So, when using this natural ingredient, we urge you to please do your research and possibly consult a dermatologist. Again, if you don’t have a dermatologist, don’t fret you can consult with us here at Renew and our staff is here to help you every step of the way.
